Glazing

Glazing

Here at Gleesons we have an extensive range of glazing options that will enhance, protect and beautify your artwork.  We will explain in detail the difference between these products and offer advice on the best product to choose.

The function of glass/glazing is to protect the artwork and, ideally, it should not be noticeable.  Your choice of glass will be dependent on what the artwork is, the type, style and weight of the frame it is in and where it will be placed.  Depending on the natural or unnatural light of the room, whether you will have a dedicated picture light above or below it, and many more considerations - these are the things we will discuss with you to ensure that the glazing option you choose is right for you and for your artwork.

While our UV filtering glass cuts out 99% of harmful UV rays, this alone will not eliminate fading and other deterioration.  All light, not just UV light, can be damaging as well as humidity, changes in temperature, pollution and moisture which are all contributing factors.  Conservation framing techniques and materials will help minimise the risk of damage.

Glazing Options

  • Plain Glass.
  • Conservation Glass has coating which effectively blocks up to 99% of UV light rays, and helps protect against fading caused by UV rays.
  • Art glass, which has a high quality coating allowing exceptionally high light transmission, low light reflection and accurate colour rendition. In other words, super clear almost invisible, while keeping the colours in your art work extraordinarily vivid.
  • Museum glass has a UV blocking coating with exceptionally high light transmission, low light reflection and accurate colour rendition. Super clarity with UV protection.
  • Acrylic and plastic glazing, we recommend for larger pieces and also where safety is a concern. And this option can also come with a UV protecting coating and scratch resistance.
  • Optium Museum Acrylic, we use this on larger frames where glass isn’t advisable. Optium is anti-reflective coating allowing you to see the finest details in crystal clear colour neutrality, it has UV-filtering qualities, abrasion resistant acrylic, and anti-static coating offering uncompromising protection and preservation.
  • Reglazing existing frames.
  • We also stock a professional glass cleaning liquid.
Gleeson Framers offer a wide range of glazing options so please contact us for advice.
